From: Betty Haden, Region 3 Director |

Notes From Betty…
A Special Thank You to all those
involved with putting on another great Regional Qualifier Show. This
year’s show was a tremendous success in every respect. An extra
special thanks goes to the show "slaves," your efforts made it all
possible!
Can you believe that we filled the show with 500
entries again this year? This will make the GSR Qualifier Show the
second largest show in the nation behind the International once more.
I also wish to extend a huge thanks to all of the
exhibitors who attended the show with their beautiful cats. The GSR
covers a lot of territory and some of the exhibitors traveled a great
distance to be there.
Our deepest
sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Charles
Schreiner. Charles passed away on October 7, 2002. Charles and Sylvia
are Chez Mana Cattery from New Orleans, LA.
I am compiling a mailing list
consisting of Region 3 exhibitors. To assist me in this project I
would like to ask all show secretaries’ to send me a copy of their
show catalog and an exhibitor list with addresses as soon as
your show is over.
I will provide mailing labels to the clubs that want
them for a small fee. The proceeds will go toward the Regional
Awards Show.

Show Managers and Clubs… If your club
is planning a show on a weekend that is different than the
weekend that it was held last year, you must have approval from
the Regional Director. A letter requesting the change must accompany
your show license. Steve Gardea is the Region Show Schedule
Coordinator. You may also contact me directly.
Congratulations to the new candidates
that were accepted into the CFA Judging Program and those judges that
advanced in status at the recent CFA Board of Directors meeting.
Accepted as SH Trainees: Marsha Ammons, Yoshiko
Sada
Accepted as LH Trainee: Ed Davis
Advanced to Approval Pending SH: Carla Bizzell,
Kathy Black, Rick Hoskinson, Hisako Komoto
Advanced to Approved:
LH: Vicki Abelson, Ayumi Ueda
SH: Steve Gardea, Ellyn Honey
Cell Phones in the Show Hall… In order
to cut down on cell phone disturbances in the show ring and avoid
possible CFA legislation limiting cell phones in the show ring/hall,
all exhibitors, clerks and judges are being asked to place their
phones on silent ring or leave them in the benching area. In the event
that they do ring in the judging ring, please leave the judging ring
area immediately to answer the call.
Thank you for your cooperation!
Beginning October 2003, The Madison
Square Garden Show will be held on the weekend previously reserved for
the Regional Qualifier Shows. The regions are now encouraged to
conduct a fundraiser show on this weekend.
In the past, The Gulf Shore Region’s Qualifier Show has been our
biggest moneymaker. In its absence, we will be looking for clubs that
are willing to hold fundraising shows for the region. Please remember,
it is important that we raise enough money each year to pay for our
Regional Awards and the Awards show without taking money from our
Annual Meeting fund. We also need fundraising ideas in order to build
up the treasury for the 2007 Annual Meeting. We welcome all ideas and
are looking for that eager volunteer(s) who will head up the
fundraising committee.
The 2003 Regional Awards Show will be
held the weekend of May 31 & June 1 in Ft. Worth, TX. Jimmie Hawley is
the show manager and Vivian Brownlee is the Awards Program
Coordinator. If you are interested in helping in any area, please
contact Jimmie at
jimmiehawley@hotmail.com, Vivian at
BEWPers@aol.com or Betty at
stormy@beecreek.net.
The Regional Awards show in 2004 is
being planned for Austin TX. The Regional Awards show in 2005 is being
planned in Denver CO. Would Oklahoma be interested in the 2006 show?
The on-site chairman for the 2007
Annual Meeting, to be held in Austin TX, is Jimmie Hawley. Any club
interested in participating in this big event, please contact Betty.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to the
family and friends of Art Anzalone. Art passed away in October, 2002.
Art is survived by his wife Linda. They are Lindarts Cattery from
Kenner, LA.

Please check the website
often,
I will place items there between newsletters. If you have any
questions, contact me at
stormy@beecreek.net.
THANKS! Betty

Treasurer’s Report ~ November, 2002
As your treasurer, I encourage you to review the
financial reports that will be found in our region newsletters...
Should you have questions, please contact me at your convenience. We
want the information in these reports to help us make good financial
decisions. Suggestions for a format that is easily understood are
welcome.
We have a task before us. As our last "qualifier" show
is in our past, we must look to the future for ideas and positive
approaches to raise funds. The Region’s purposes are many, but two of
the major ones require substantial funding.
The first major expense is our yearly regional banquet
which should be a gala enjoyed by everyone. It is an honor for the
region to produce this event. The awards should be meaningful and
worthy of the effort required reaching this goal. It should be FUN and
a real celebration for all Region 3 exhibitors. The second major
expense is the responsibility for hosting the CFA annual in 2007. It
is not too early to make a workable financial budget that ensures all
of these events are adequately funded.
The qualifier has historically been the largest
moneymaker for our region. Without this REQUIRED show, we need to
diligently pursue sponsorships and donations for our events.
To assist with this planning, we have formed a
financial review committee. The members are Bill Combs (the former GSR
treasurer), Christine Willingham and Jimmie Hawley. I will provide the
committee periodic reports. Their job is to review my work on your
behalf and to assist in providing leadership to reach the monetary
goals of the region.
I appreciate the faith that our director has placed in
me. Even though I serve at the pleasure of the director, I know she
agrees with me when I say, "I am here to work for your benefit."
Respectfully,
Elizabeth (Betsy) Gaither Treasurer GSR

CFA Legislative Committee News – Fall 2002
Highlights for CFA Regional Web Sites and newsletter
publications:
At the October Board meeting, Joan Miller, CFA
Legislative Committee Chair, received Board approval for CFA to join
the American Partnership for Pets (APP), an organization formed in the
wake of the successful campaign to have spay/neuter postage stamps
issued by the U.S. Postal Service. The stamps feature a puppy and a
kitten and the message, "Spay/Neuter". APP plans future programs to
raise public awareness of the various problems related to homeless
cats and dogs and to fund research projects.
Among the APP membership of more than 25 organizations
there are some with extreme animal rights goals contrary to those of
cat fanciers. Other members, such as the American Veterinary Medial
Association, Alley Cat Allies and the National Animal Control
Association, are more moderate or aligned with our interests. CFA, as
a member of APP will be able to provide input and have some
opportunity to influence the developing direction of this Partnership.
Lynn Thompson, of Florida, has been named Fundraiser
for the Sy Howard Legislative Fund. The fund matches money raised to
aid in addressing legislative challenges or to advance alternatives to
legislation detrimental to CFA and the breeding of pedigreed cats.
Examples are CFA’s participation in the National Council for Pet
Population Study and Policy, Pet Night on Capitol Hill, sponsorship of
a state legislative workshop, an educational video, advertisements and
other vital grass roots action tools. Lynn will encourage donations
and also assist clubs in preparing their requests for project funding.
CFA again was an affiliate sponsor for the Animal
Health Institute’s Pet Night on Capitol Hill in Washington DC,
September 17, 2002. Joan Miller, Tom Dent, Michael Brim and several
local cat fanciers represented CFA at this important event attended by
almost 900 members of Congress, their spouses and staff members,
veterinary, pharmaceutical and pet industry representatives. This
year’s celebrity pets were the stars from two blockbuster movies and
guests were photographed with the shaded silver Persian who played
"Snowbell" in Stuart Little II and the Pug dog, "Mushu," who played
"Frank the Pug" in Men in Black II.
Prior to Pet Night, Joan, Tom and Michael joined with
representatives of the AKC, PIJAC (Pet Industry Joint Advisory
Council) and APPMA (American Pet Products Manufacturing Association)
for an annual ad-hoc legislative meeting to discuss federal and other
legislative matters of mutual interest. Another full day was devoted
to a preliminary facilitated meeting with a Washington communications
strategy firm. The purpose was to define the legislative challenges we
mutually face and to determine the feasibility of a coordinated
long-range plan to raise awareness of legislators, community leaders
and the public for our views concerning legislation, the value of
pedigreed cat/purebred dog breeding and of pet ownership in general.
The Board was updated on the recently announced
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Department of Transportation
(DOT) Proposed Rules regarding airline reporting of incidents
involving the loss, injury or death of animals during air transport.
We are in the process of analyzing the language presented and have
requested a 60-day extension beyond the 30-day period announced.
Updates and ALERTS will be on the CFA web site,
www.cfainc.org.
