03 March 2002:

 REGIONAL DIRECTORS COMMENTS:

The members of the Gulf Shore Region should be proud of themselves, because of the raffle held at our Regional Qualifier, we were able to send a check for $368.00 to CFA.  The funds were earmarked for Disaster Relief, in “memory of 9-11”.

I want to thank Kris Joubert for all the work she has done on the preparations for the Regional Awards Show and Banquet.  We realize that a lot of time goes into the Regional Show and we really appreciate those that so generously give their time.

Attached are my notes from the February Board Meeting (see enclosure 1) held in Houston, TX.

REGIONAL AWARDS BANQUET:

The Gulf Shore regional Awards Banquet will be 1-2 June 2002 in Bossier City, LA.  Attached is a flier for the show (see enclosure 2).

Here are some of the things to keep in mind, since the end of the show season is 31 April:

 1.  We only have 30 days, from the end of the show season, to make preparations for the awards banquet, to arrange for the regional awards, prepare the awards booklet and slide presentations.  YOU NEED TO BE SENDING YOUR PHOTOS NOW!  THE ABSOLUTE DEADLINE FOR US TO RECEIVE YOUR PHOTO IS 1 MAY, 2002.  IF WE RECEIVE YOUR PICTURES LATER THAN THIS DATE, YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OVERNIGHT EXPENSE THE REGION WILL INCUR.

2.YOU, SHOULD KNOW before the official results are posted if your cat is a regional winner, regional breed winner or best of color class winner (enclosure 3 is the regional standings as of 1 Mar 2002 - with  handout only NOT posted on website).  You may not know the exact placement and you might get “bumped out” if you’re teetering on the edge.

 3. We will need COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS again this year for the booklet and presentation.  Regional Winning Cats, Kittens and Premiers should have TWO (2) photographs ready.  One to be sent for the Award Plaque and one for the awards booklet and video presentation.  PLEASE LABEL YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS WITH THE CATS NAME, BREEDER AND OWNER.  Also the award or placement you expect to receive.

 4. Breed and color class winners need only one photo.

 5. If your cat is a regional Winner or receiving a Distinguished Merit (DM) Award, ONE photograph for the Award Plaque should be sent to:

Preferred Promotions Network
P.O. Box 1830
Stephenville, TX 76401
You can call Jan at 254-965-7792

And ONE photograph should be sent to:

James Watson
29 Hilton Drive
Conway, AR 72034-9607 note new zip code
You can call James at 501-327-8204

For Best Cat, Best Kitten and Best Premier, if you want a different pose on the cover, inside the awards booklet and the video presentation, send at least three (3) different photographs to James Watson.

 6. If your cat is Best, Second or third Best of Breed, send one picture to James Watson.

 7. If your cat is best of Color Class, send one picture to James Watson.

 8. IF YOU WANT YOUR PICTURE BACK, enclose a self addressed stamped envelope.

 9. If there is a possibility, that you may receive an award, send your photographs in.   We are going to be pressed for time.

 10. Contact James Watson at Jwatson@tcworks.net if you want to send your picture via e-mail.  Your picture needs to be scanned at 300dpi, and in full color.

ON-THE-ROAD AGAIN:

One of the hi-lights of the 2001 Awards Banquet was the great On-The-Road presentation that Sue Riley orchestrated.  Sue has graciously volunteered to arrange the computerized presentation in Bossier City for 2002.

Please help us have another successful banquet by sending your PICTURES to:

Sue Riley
322 Country Road 97
Nederland, CO 80466

2002 GULF SHORE REGIONAL QUALIFIER:

The 2002 Regional Qualifier will be held 12-13 October at the Big Town Center in Mesquite, TX.  You MUST ENTER AND ATTEND the Qualifier in order to be eligible to attend the International Cat Show that will be held 22-24 October, 2002 in Houston, TX.

The 2001 Regional Qualifier filled with 500 cats and we had to turn 65 cats away.  Entries will be accepted in the order that they are received (by the postmark or fax).

Marsha Ammons has volunteered to be show manager again this year, she will need all the help we can provide, so volunteer early.

The Iams Company is helping to sponsor the 2002 Regional Qualifiers with a donation of $2,500 to the region.

The Judges the clubs have selected for the Gulf Shore Regional Qualifier are:

Vaughn Barber                     All Breed

Doug Myers                         All Breed

Gary Veach                            All Breed

Carolyn Owen                       Specialty

Barbara St Georges                Specialty

Betty White                            Specialty

Willa Hawke                           Alternate

Norma Placchi                        Alternate

Dianne Dunn                           Alternate

The Region is seeking ring sponsors to offset the cost of clerks, stewards and rosettes (cat clubs, catteries, businesses, exhibitors, etc).  Sponsorship of the rings raised $1,800 in 2001.

NOTE:  The Board has voted to do away with the Regional Qualifier’s in 2003.  The October dates will be used for Regional Fund Raising Show.

There will be no entry requirement; everyone will be able to enter the International Cat Show.

2003 GULF SHORE REGION AWARDS BANQUET AND 2003 FUND RAISER:

Where do you want your 2003 Regional Awards Banquet held?  We are looking for locations for our regional awards banquet and the regional fundraiser to be held in October 2003.  If you or your club would like to make a suggestion, let you regional director know.

 JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP:

                Gloria F. Hoover

The GSR Junior Showmanship Program continues to gain momentum.  As of February 2002 we have had thirteen different juniors participate in regional shows.

The area coordinators and I are working to put together an awards program to be presented at the Gulf Shore Awards presentation and banquet in June. It is our plan to provide special awards for the top five scoring participants (open, junior & senior). The following juniors have participated to date and stand a chance for an award.  Novice:  C. Kerin, M. Lingsweiler,  K. May, C. Majewski, S. Thompson-Cimino, A. Vernon.  Open: L. Amisquita, K. Capron, H. McFadyn, M. Moore, Taylor Peck, E. Swedlund.  Junior/Senior: Teale Peck.  Allene from the central office is helping to calculate the points.  If your child has participated and does not appear on the list please let me know.

The JS scoring season for qualifications to attend the CFA International Show starts September 1st and runs through August 31st.  Since the GSR awards banquet will be held in June it will be necessary for us to use scores from the months of September through April 30th (8-months).

Attention:  The regional awards will have no affect on the qualification for the International Show and will not be considered by the central office in their calculations.

If you have not had the opportunity to watch a JS ring you should take the time to do so.  It is amazing how much some of these juniors have grown in their presentation skills and confidence since the program began.  If we can continue to encourage these young people just think what good CFA judges we may have in the future.

Remember; if your club is planning a show please consider sponsoring a JS ring.  Be sure the information is placed on your first flyer.  Any of the area coordinators will be happy to help if they can.  Please feel free to contact anyone of them: Colorado Area: Cheryl Peck; Oklahoma Area Brenda Moore; Texas Area, Grace Sutton-Guidry.

CFA SHOW LISCENSE FEES:

Do you ever wonder where your money goes once your club sends it to the CFA Central Office?  I have enclosed a breakdown of show cost that was provided to the Board by Tom Dent (see enclosure 4).  You may want to discuss it at your next club meeting.
